The series of illustrations done for "A Hawk in the Sun" by Leon R. Powers were based on reference materials and memories collected by the artist during her years of field work on ferruginous hawks, as well as material supplied by Leon. Over the years, Leon, the artist's husband Tim, and Erica have done many scientific research projects together, particularly on raptors. They three of them have team-taught a course in raptor biology at Northwest Nazarene University for the past twenty-five years.
